Topology fo Federation

November 23, 2003 By: Andre Category: Ping Identity

While examining the key characteristics and deployment scenarios of federation, we (Ping) discovered that federations typically occur in one of three profiles.  Furthermore, we discovered that certain types of companies were more likely to engage in one type of federation than another (at least early on), and that Phase I of federation adoption, where companies engaged either as a consumer or an issuer, but not likely both at the same time, would likely give way to what is referred to within as Cross Domain federation, whereby companies engaged in both consuming and issuing identity assertions simultaneously.

This blog attempts to describe each of the three federation profiles, their characteristics and their timing. Read Entire Story….

Taxonomy of Federated Identity

The following diagram illustrates a break-down of likely roles that companies will play in the identity provioning of individuals. Both enterprises and network on-ramps (such as ISPs and Wireless Operators) are likely to emerge as primary authenticators. In addition to authenticators, we’ll likely also see a classification of companies emerge which can best be called Attribute Providers, in that they will not view their role in the identity provisioning process to be one of authentication, but instead to provide identity attributes through federation. Companies like Equifax and ID Analytics will likely fall into this category.

Financial Services, Health Care, Telecommunications & Manufacturing Lead Early Traction for Identity Federation

Denver, CO – May 27, 2003 – Ping Identity Corporation (www.pingidentity.com), today announced that SourceID.Java (www.sourceid.org), the leading open source Java toolkit for enabling Liberty Alliance (Phase I) identity federation and federated single sign-on (SSO) has surpassed 1,000 downloads since first becoming available on January 20th of this year.

Mr. Durand added, “A majority of the companies evaluating SourceID and Liberty federation are Global 1000 companies, many of which are have not participated in the technical standards setting efforts of the Liberty Alliance, but are now nonetheless demonstrating their interest in Liberty-enabled solutions for identity federation.”
